Congolese American Singer Rafiya Releases New Single
Undoubtedly, “My number”, the new single by Afro-soul music artist Rafiya featuring rapper M.O.A, is fresh and exciting to listen to.
Although the instrumental accompaniment, the first couple of seconds into the song is quite familiar and trendy, it mellows while keeping the excitement into a soulful, yet vibrant afro-beat; a combination of what sounds like a cross between northern Ghanaian sound and francophone zouk. Further into the track, a Ghanaian melody very reminiscent of highlife tunes from the 70s and 80s slowly creeps in altogether creating a unique and original sound unmistakably African.
Rafiya’s voice in “My number” is powerful, rich and distinctive, portraying the strong emotion and subtle aggression of the song, without over-stretching the notes. Her wide vocal range truly does the song justice.
The lyrics of the song are dreamy and romantic but also portray a strong decisive woman who knows what (and who) she wants and so sets out to get it: “He stole my heart the first time I saw him” then goes on to say, “No doubt I gotta have him.”
The only thing I would take away from the song is the rap. It does not do justice to the song and actually makes it a bit more ordinary.
This number will do well in the club and stand shoulder to shoulder with any club number as well as be well suited to a quiet evening at home or a romantic wedding reception.
All in all, Rafiya’s “My number” featuring M.O.A is memorable and one of those songs that will be one people’s lips for a long time to come.
