What is Obaasema?

The word ‘Obaasema’ is a play on the Ghanaian language Twi word ‘Obaasima’, which means Ideal woman. An essential part of the name is its deliberate fusion of the words ‘woman’ (obaa) and ‘issues’ (asem) to express the brand’s passion for addressing women’s issues.

Obaasema is a space that sees, hears, and centers Black and African women. What started as a platform to amplify our stories years ago has now evolved into a movement to reclaim well-being – redefining it through the lens of our lived experiences. For too long, wellness has been shaped by a narrow perspective that doesn’t reflect our personal journeys. We’re here to broaden that view, shifting the conversation to one that truly reflects who we are.

Because we don’t need to chase wellness, we embody it.

At Obaasema, we’re building a community and a culture where rest is celebrated, joy is sacred, and wholeness is our birthright. Whether it’s through the words we share, the rituals we embrace, or the products we create, everything we do is rooted in the belief that clean, intentional living is not a luxury, it’s our legacy.

This is wellness, redefined.
This is Obaasema.

And we’re just getting started.
