I have always enjoyed spontaneous and creative outings more than something that seemed too contrived or unoriginal. For instance, one of the best dates I had was a free visit to a local observatory to see the stars and planets through a huge telescope. But not every date has to be stereotypically romantic. Some of the best dates happen when you try something new. Whether you have been with your partner for several months or years, or you have just started dating someone new, it can be very easy to fall into the trap of doing the same things over and over again; that can take the fun out of any relationship. Although I love going to the movies, I have found that the excitement I used to have walking into a theater with my partner lessens when we overdo it, like walks at night during the summer culminated by an ice-cream cone or visits to a local public garden or park. I have found that the simpler, more intimate and somewhat unusual things are the most enjoyable.
There are many ways to keep your dates and outings fresh and new:
Take advantage of local events and activities
One of the first things I do whenever I move somewhere new is to find the official neighborhood website and look into festivals, events, concerts, and other things happening during various times of the year. Many places invest in advertising local events as a way to attract tourists and locals alike. Make use of these events and plan to spend a day or night out doing something in your neighborhood that is not part of your normal routine. In particular look for seasonal things like a hayride in the fall or a garden walk in the spring.
Free is always good
You may be surprised about the large amount of wonderful things you can do and enjoy for free. Indulge in a free wine tasting event with your partner before having a picnic you have packed yourself outside. Attend free events at libraries. Enjoy the sounds of a free concert. Take a walk through a free public garden or park and take pictures or just sit and talk. Most importantly, take advantage of any discounts available to you. Are you a student? Attend events on your campus or places like certain museums for a discounted or even free admission.
Smaller is sometimes better
Occasionally some of the best places are the ones that are off the beaten track. Travel magazines use this strategy when they boast things like “The Best Undiscovered Islands!” Off Broadway shows, small unusual restaurants, etc. become wonderful if only for the relative peace and quiet not offered by places often frequented by tourists and sightseers. Don’t be afraid to go to places you have never heard of and try something you have never tried before.
The ultimate goal is for you and your partner to enjoy yourselves, and although you may think you know all of the things that make you happy, trying something new, something a little different, may pleasantly surprise you both.
