Emotional Detox: How to do this Effectively

Few people are aware of the importance of an emotional detox and how beneficial it can be for their overall well-being. Just like food, our bodies get congested with several emotions and require action on our part to flush them out in order to make way for positive habits, behaviors and emotions.

At the beginning of 2022, we encouraged you to be intentional about your goals for the new year. This year, in addition to being intentional with your goals, we invite you to take some time to emotionally detox first. What is this, really? It means taking steps to clear unresolved, negative feelings.

How?

You can start by making a list of unpleasant feelings you’ve tucked away, either because they’ve been too difficult to deal with or you haven’t been ready to address them. These feelings can range from anger, bitterness, sadness, fear and simply frustration.

If you’re unsure about your need for emotional detoxification, the following signs may be helpful:

  • Unexplained heaviness that doesn’t seem to go away.
  • Lack of motivation for a longer period.
  • Getting easily angered even when unprovoked.

While the list above is not exhaustive, it should serve as a guide to help you identify your need for emotional detox. Since your mental health has a huge effect on your physical health, we recommend kicking off with clearing your mind first, to help give clarity in your focus.
