Vaginal discharge, as strange as it may sound, is very healthy for the female reproductive system. The vagina and cervix contain glands that produce fluids whose function is to transport dead cells and bacteria, while keeping the vagina clean and preventing infections. But how can you tell that all is well down there? We have provided a few tips to help you identify normal and abnormal vaginal discharge.
What is normal?
A clear white discharge that is not accompanied by symptoms of itching, irritation or burning. So is the creamy white and odorless discharge you may notice a few days before your period.
If you’re actively trying to get pregnant and notice thick and milky white discharge during this period, it may be a sign of early pregnancy and that is also considered normal.
So, what is abnormal?
When the dischage is itchy and looks clumpy. This may indicate yeast infection caused by an overgrowth of yeast or fungus in the vagina and will require treatment. Consult your doctor if you notice this type of discharge.
While healthy vaginas have a typical scent that is considered normal, a thick, white discharge with foul odor is a cause for concern. You must see a doctor immediately if you experience this as it could be an infection.
How do you maintain a healthy vagina?
- If you exercise regulary, you must bath after each session.
- Don’t use scented soaps, douche, feminine sprays and bubble baths.
- After peeing, wipe from front to back to stop bacteria from getting into the vulva area or vagina and causing an infection.
