Natural Hair – Best Practice For Transition Phase

Transitioning from relaxed to natural hair can be challenging. If you follow these few key tips, however, they can reduce some frustration and make this a pretty pain-free process.

The first step is to make sure to do co-washes. In a previous article I spoke about the importance of doing these regularly. This is very important to the health and manageability of hair in transition.

Next is to make sure you wear your hair in protective styles. This is any style that reduces the wear and tear on your hair while it has two different textures. The term “protective style” is normally used in reference to braided extensions, crochet braids or weaves, but a blow out can also be a protective style. Getting a good blow out where the roots are made as straight as the relaxed ends eliminates the friction and ensuing breakage that can occur when handling hair with two different textures.

Last but not least, be sure to get regular trims. While you are working towards that big chop, you still want the hair to look and feel healthy. In order to do so, trimming hair every 2-3 months is highly recommended.
If you stick to the above recommendations, the transition will be a pleasant experience.
