Rice water for hair conditioner? We finally gave this popular conditioner for 4C hair a try and can attest to its benefits. After 8 weeks of testing, we can confirm that it does deliver on its promise to detangle and smoothen hair, increase sheen, strengthen and lengthen. Here’s what we did.

You may already know that there are several ways of making rice water for this purpose. We used the fermentation method, which involves the following:
Preparation and ingredients:
- Use ½ cup of uncooked rice
- Thoroughly rinse
- Fill a bowl with 2 to 3 cups of water and then pour the rice into it
- Add lemon or orange peels to the rice and water (this adds some fragrance to the liquid post-fermentation).
- Allow to sit for 24-48 hours
- Strain the rice water into a clean bowl
- Refrigerate fermented rice water in order to prevent further fermentation
Application:
- Wash hair with your usual shampoo
- Thoroughly rinse out the shampoo with clean water
- Pour rice water onto your hair
- Massage it into your scalp and hair
- Cover hair with a plastic cap and leave it on for about 20 minutes
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water
Apply this conditioner for a period of 8 weeks for best results.
