Creating An Eclectic Room On A Budget

The key to renewing your space will be using what you already have and I’m a huge fan of that! It will take a bit more creativity and ingenuity, but it can be done, and done well.  Go for an eclectic vibe for your space- blend different styles and periods of furniture to create a truly personal and stylized haven.  Pack your patience as you let your space come together over time.  Here are a few general tips that I can offer you to help:

1. Give your sofa the slip! Literally. If your sofa is dated or worn then consider a slip cover.  You can revive your sofa for a fraction of the cost of a new, and slip covers usually accommodate a range of sizes.  You’ll just need to follow the recommended instructions for measuring your sofa to get the appropriate slip cover size.  Just add throw pillows to complete your look.  You could even buy throw pillow covers for the pillows you already have to save additional dollars.

2. Mirror Images. Use mirrors wherever you can to do two things: Create the illusion of more space, and reflect light. Shop at thrift stores or local markets to find inexpensive ones.

3.  Art.  It needn’t be pricey.  You can purchase inexpensive frames to repurpose posters, attractive scrapbook paper or pages from magazines that you already own. Consider grouping wall hangings in odd numbers to maximize and create a statement.

4.  Paint, or spray-paint what you can. I spray-paint things a lot as color refreshes anything! If you are allowed to paint the walls in your apartment then consider it.  If too costly, consider painting just one wall in any given room to create a focal point and interest.  I discovered the wonders of spray-paints a year ago while experimenting.  It’s very affordable and can be purchased in a rainbow of colors and finishes. For example, if I really like a frame but dislike the color I just spray-paint it. Gratification in minutes!

5. Organization.  This should go without saying, but it is amazing how simple organization can make any space sparkle.  Make sure that everything has a “home.” Find simple storage boxes for items you don’t use every day.
