Ghana at 60: Historical Women You Should Know

As Ghana celebrates 60 years of independence from colonial rule today, we wanted to take the opportunity to spotlight a few of the women who have left colorful marks in Ghanaian history.

Theodosia Okoh

Theodosia Salome Okoh designed Ghana’s national flag. She was the first female chairman of the Ghana Hockey Association.

Susanna Al-Hassan was a politician and one of the first females to be appointed minister in 1961 under the Nkrumah administration. She was also a children’s book writer, authoring the once popular book, Asana and the Magic Calabash, The River That Became a Lake: The Story of the Volta River Project, and Issa and Amina.

Betty Quashie-Idun was Ghana’s first female radio presenter.

Monica Amekoafia was the first to carry the crown in Ghana’s first Miss Ghana beauty pageant in 1957.
