Natural Hair Styling: Elongating Tight Curls

My hair seems to shrink very easily and always looks like it doesn’t grow out. However, when I put a thread on it and loosen it out, it looks longer once stretched. How can I keep my natural hair looking long? Any particular products?

Major shrinkage is one of the few downsides of naturally curly hair. The tighter the curl pattern, the more shrinkage you incur. Unfortunately I have not come across a non-permanent product that will loosen hair and make it look longer. On the temporary side though, Eco styler is a great option depending on curl pattern. It does, however, also require that you use a blow drier to help stretch the hair and dry it in its elongated state.

For tighter curls, twist out or bantu knots are good options. To get an even more stretched out look from these techniques, try blow drying the hair with a comb attachment before performing the styles and avoid using water based curling creams to twist as they may cause the hair to shrink.

Happy Styling!
