The Evolved Ghanaian Woman

Features From GhanaInPix

There’s something about getting lost in pictures from decades past that takes one on an exciting historical journey to probe and unearth. Inspired by the project GhanaInPix which mainly sits on Twitter, creatively and engagingly exhibiting images that resurrect historical Ghana, this piece attempts to analyze the evolution of the Ghanaian woman.

Some of the most striking images from the GhanaInPix project have been various classes of Ghanaian women ranging from celebrities, diplomats to the average girl pounding fufu.

It is quite interesting to see a young Ghanaian girl evolve over the decades – from embracing the role of the wife of a chief, transformation in choice of clothing and proudly wearing out her afro hair to eventually taking over the stage to perform music in public in the 1980s.

Fast forward to 2014, the progression has been phenomenal. Ghanaian women have embraced even more challenging roles in society that have unveiled their capabilities. Gifty Anti remains a relevant voice with her media career and role in women empowerment. Betty Enyonam Kumahor, Managing Director for global software delivery and products company ThoughtWorks, devotes a lot of time empowering African women to embrace and venture into technology. And many more Ghanaian women, having broken out of their shells, have evolved into extraordinary women impacting societal advancement.

Considering what the Ghanaian woman has become over the last 100 years, prediction for the next 100 years can only be favorable. Unfortunately, not everyone living today will get to witness it; however, there is opportunity to develop platforms that create long lasting, impact on society. What is your choice?
