Why the fuss about Black women’s hair? After all, our ancestors didn’t need to do all of this research and practice many of these so-called hair techniques in order to attain healthy locks. You’re right, they didn’t. Neither did most, if not all, use harsh, harmful chemicals on their hair for long periods of time. In fact, due to their access to plants and natural oils, they applied healthy hair products that strengthened and lengthened their locks. Fast forward to the 21st century and you need not be reminded about the importance of good natural hair treatment.
While our desire to create new looks with our hair isn’t bad, most of us have overstretched our tresses to the point of damaging our scalp. Hence, the need to take some steps back to reverse the damages caused. Truly, it has become even more crucial to be deliberate about our routines and hair care practices. This has also necessitated identifying our hair types and porosities in order to apply the best methods for health and growth.
Adopt some healthy techniques
We’ve provided natural hair treatment and tips to include in your hair care routine to encourage healthy hair.
- Moisturize hair often with a liquid moisturizer: leave-in conditioner mixed with water and oils.
- Moisturizing should be done at least every 2 days or as many times as your hair needs throughout the week.
- Practice pre-poo techniques to lock in moisture by adding penetrating oils to dry hair at least 1 hour before washing. This can also be done overnight ahead of washing. Penetrating oils to use can be coconut oil, avocado oil, olive oil, babassu oil or murumuru oil.
- Detangle hair with conditioner first.
- Wear a silk bonnet or get a silk pillow to sleep. They prevent hair dryness caused by friction. If you can’t get a silk bonnet or pillow, use a satin bonnet.
- Stop or reduce the use of heat and harsh chemicals on hair. Apply grapeseed oil before you get a blow out because it’s resistant to heat.
- Reduce the number of times you wash and go.
- If you get braids, ensure they’re not too tight.
- Less manipulation of hair is best. Practice protective styling often – braids, twists, weave.
